List of characters

Badeline is a major character and antagonist-turned-deuteragonist in Celeste. Known in-game as Part of (Madeline) or variations thereof, she haunts Madeline on several occasions, attempting to convince her to turn back and stop climbing the mountain. Following the events of Reflection, she starts helping Madeline through her journeys.

Outside of Celeste, she and Madeline appear in the Nintendo Switch version of TowerFall, an earlier game by Maddy Thorson, as playable characters.[3] Additionally, Badeline is depicted on many pieces of Celeste-associated merchandise, often alongside Madeline. Badeline also appears in Celeste 64.

Appearance

Badeline, being a part of Madeline, appears similar to Madeline, though with different colors. Her hair is usually purple, though it changes to blue and pink in the Other Self variant with 0 and 2 dashes respectively, her skin is significantly greyer, and her eyes are an unusual red-orange color. The colors of Badeline's clothing also differ from Madeline's, as Badeline's jacket is a darker purple and her pants are greyer in some appearances.

In her boss form used in Reflection, Badeline's hair expands out in a tentacle-like form in six directions, making her seem a lot larger.

Biography

Show/hide content

Badeline is introduced in Chapter 2. Initially seen in a mirror, she breaks out of it, which also activates dream blocks. Later, she tries to stop Madeline from climbing the Mountain by attempting to talk "sense" into her. After Madeline's refusal, she physically chases her down by following Madeline's exact movements (by Badeline Chasers).

In Chapter 3, she provokes Mr. Oshiro and gives him a bad impression of Madeline, resulting in the chase at the end of the chapter. Mr. Oshiro ends up chasing Madeline until the hotel's roof, which is the end of the chapter.

In Chapter 4, Badeline appears only in the end, where she stalls the gondola after Madeline gets anxious about the height. This makes Madeline suffer a panic attack.

In Chapter 5, she appears to Madeline in the Seeker section. Madeline lashes out at Badeline, but she is not to blame for the conditions in the temple. Badeline tells Maddy that she is not the only "creepy thing" living in her head, and the temple only magnifies the mountain's powers. Yet, Badeline refuses to help because she believes Madeline deserves this, leaving her to cope with it herself.

At the beginning of Chapter 6, Madeline calls her for a conversation. She says that she is better off without her, arguing that both would be happier this way. This angers and frightens Badeline, who feels abandoned. Mocking Madeline's resolve, Badeline grabs Madeline from the air, making her struggle for breath. Madeline attempts to use the feather trick taught to her by Theo, but Badeline breaks the feather, rendering it useless, and pulls Madeline down to the cave at the bottom of Mt. Celeste. However, Madeline fights back and convinces Badeline to climb the Mountain together. They reconcile, and Badeline fuses with Madeline. This way, Madeline gains a second dash, and Badeline will appear as a Badeline orb occasionally, boosting Madeline up. Together, they climb to the summit of Celeste Mountain in Chapter 7, talking about each other and their journey.

In Chapter 7 B-Side, after Madeline touches the last purple orb, Badeline expresses thrill and delight for how far they have come — the outburst of emotions shocks Madeline.

Badeline does not appear in Chapter 8, except as a purple orb.

She reappears in Chapter 9, trying to stop Madeline from chasing the Bird, believing it is pointless. Madeline disagrees and searches without Badeline's help. As such, Madeline's second dash becomes limited. Later, Badeline lends Madeline a helping hand via a Badeline Orb, tries to persuade Madeline again, but fails. She then tries a third time to stop Madeline from her pointless searches, and she finally agrees, on the condition that they free the bird, which is trapped by lightning (electricity), before waking up.

“Say goodbye to her for me.”

Appearance in gameplay

As a gameplay mechanic, Badeline appears in the form of:

  1. Badeline could be anywhere from a few days old (it can be argued that she's "born" at the start of the game) to Madeline's actual age, which is unknown.
  2. Her status as trans is disputed, as the official confirmation does not mention it.
