Celeste Wiki:Categories
Categories are a feature of MediaWiki. They allow you to group related articles, files, templates, and other pages to simplify navigation among readers and editors. On Celeste Wiki, every article, file, category page, and page in the Celeste Wiki namespace must belong to at least one category (with several exceptions: the Main Page with its subpages, and the root category Category:Contents). Celeste Wiki uses HotCat, an extension allowing users to easily add, remove, or change categories on a page. To suppress most accidental clicks on the remove category button, only registered users who made at least one edit can remove categories with HotCat.
This article contains information about the functioning of categories on Celeste Wiki.
Operations with categories[edit | edit source]
On articles[edit | edit source]
You can add a page to a category using several methods:
- by using HotCat;
- through the visual editor menu;
- by adding
[[Category:categoryname]]
in the source editor; - by adding a template that automatically categorizes pages.
They will be sorted alphabetically within the category, but you can change that by using sortkeys ([[Category:categoryname|sortkey]]
). A common trick is making a space character as a sortkey for main articles of a category.
Category pages[edit | edit source]
When creating a category, always include its parent category. The category must be named logically and not controversially, as it is hard to rename them later. There are no other requirements for category pages, though you might want to use Template:CatBrowser or other navigation templates there.
Moving (renaming) already populated categories is a hard change, so unless it has less than about a dozen members and has an obvious mistake in its title, renaming categories requires community consensus. When you have it, contact administrators who can automatically move all articles (through bots). Remember to change all applicable templates to point to the new category, and to categorize new articles into the new category. This also applies to deleting categories.
Special pages about categories[edit | edit source]
Celeste Wiki has many special pages related to categories, including:
- Special:UncategorizedCategories, Special:UncategorizedFiles, Special:UncategorizedPages (also Special:UncategorizedTemplates, but it's unnecessary)
- Special:UnusedCategories lists unused categories. Some of them are tracking categories and can (or even should) be unused.
- Special:WantedCategories collects nonexistent categories included in pages.
- Special:Categories lists all categories.
- Special:CategoryTree (start with root category) displays a category tree.
- Special:TrackingCategories lists some monitoring system categories.
- Special:MostLinkedCategories lists categories with the most members.
Category overview[edit | edit source]
Category:Contents is the root category of Celeste Wiki. From there:
- Category:Celeste houses almost all Celeste-related articles, both vanilla and modded. Mods have their subcategory, Category:Mods.
- Category:Celeste Wiki community contains pages mostly for editors of Celeste Wiki, like guides and policies.
- Category:Community is the place for articles related to the Celeste community.
- Category:Files is where most files are. This category is intended to house other categories auto-populated by licensing templates, and thus does not include every file.
- Category:Fun for humorous articles.
- Category:Other games houses articles about games that aren't original Celeste: Celeste Classic, Celeste Classic 2, and Celeste 64.
- Category:Technical categories contains some categories automatically added by certain templates and meant for Celeste Wiki editors. This includes templates, which have their own category tree here, although most are still uncategorized.
You can explore more in the category tree.
